windlight test: secondlife first looks viewer

youtube film clip
blip.tv (much better res)

Some quick test on the first look viewer just out. Has LOTS of controls and setting sliders, including motion for clouds. Is whole new way to set what your view of SL is.

Not sure what plan is to allow content creators a way to manager user experience. Seems like a critical point otherwise people will either miss out on functionality or no one will be seeing same thing when they visit an area.

FYI, viewer is unstable enuff and seems to cut draw distance to 50-100m. I didn't find anywhere to set draw distance, but guess it is limited as the whole thing is slow as it is.

I've checked out windlight and there's a lot in there for builders. The new glow effects on a per prim face basis allow you to produce everything from camera flare to atmospheric effects. The fine control also over water, sky, and more importantly lighting during day/night cycles allows for much more control over the way full sim builds look. You no longer have to set them to a static time, you can make them have a night cycle with things like storms and fog and warmer lighting etc coming in on cue.

As for frame rates I've tried with a couple of cards that run shaders and get better framerates out of windlight than the standard client. They still have quite a bit to tweak before it's ready for the mainstream though. Shiny textures particularly are too bright, and there's a couple of bugs with invisiprims (or are they features?)

Greenies sim now has about 4 or 5 small windlight based per-prim-glow effects in the sim as a treat for people using the client. Thought early adopters might like a surprise. The most noticable is the new glows around the light fittings.

ty Pav...now we just need a object based way to trigger windlight settings!

<3 windlight, it makes everything seem more realistic. i updated the carnival with some eerie glow, best viewed with the sky setting as 'Gelatto'.

found the draw distance setting...is on the graphics panel on right hand column of tick boxes, you need to first select "custom" to see them...
